Maria Piscopo, 69, of Brewster, died around 1 a.m. during the fatal three-vehicle crash on I-684 in North Castle, said Trooper AJ Hicks.
An initial investigation suggests that Joseph Piscopo Jr., 47, who was driving a 2001 GMC Denali, with Maria Piscopo in the passenger seat, was traveling northbound when he and rear-ended a 2001 Dodge Dakota, Hicks said.
While attempting to pull off onto the shoulder of the highway, Piscopo’s Denali was then rear-ended by a 2012 Izuzu box truck operated by Saed K. Alkasaji, 43, of Danbury, he said.
All three were transported to Westchester Medical Center by ambulance, where Maria Piscopo was later pronounced deceased.
This investigation remains ongoing.
The State Police were assisted on scene by the Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Katonah Fire Department, Troop K Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, Troop K Collision Reconstruction Unit, and the Westchester Medical Examiner’s Office.
Piscopo and her late husband, Joseph, took over the business from Joseph's father who started the business 76 years ago.
